What is Sa’ee in Islam?

Originally, the word Sa’ee comes from the Arabic word Sa'a, which means to walk or to struggle. One of the obligatory parts of Umrah and Hajj is Sa'i, which refers to the two hills of Safa-Marwa, between which there is a ritual of running or walking. These two hills are located near the Kaaba Sharif inside Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. People who come for Umrah from all over the world perform seven rounds of Safa Marwa during Tawaf.

Note: Most people don't know about Sa’ee. So first, you have to read about Sa’ee and other Umrah guidelines, then book your Hajj and Umrah jounrey Packages.

History of Sa’ee?

It is a memorial place of sacrifice of a mother for her son. His mother was Hazrat Hajira and her son was Hazrat Ismail. Hazrat Ibrahim was the husband of Hazrat Hajira and Ismail's father. An example of Haji's sacrifice occurred when Hazrat Hajira’s son Hazrat Ismail was left alone in the valley of Makkah by the order of Allah. But when she had used all the water, Safa climbed the hill and wanted to see someone, but there was no one far away, the whole area was empty. She ran down to Marwa hill she kept running around to get help or fetch water from somewhere. Before she went to her son, she ran back and forth between the hills in the scorching heat seven times in search of water, which they had left on the same ground to make their search faster and easier. When they didn't get anything, Hazrat Hajira got scared and prayed to Allah to save her son's life. According to Islamic tradition, this was a special time when Allah accepted the medicine of Hazrat Hajira(AS) and sent the angel Gabriel (A.S) from heaven. He hits his arm on the ground and water came out from there. Hazrat Hajira drank the holy water and gave it to his son and thanked God, and he built a well around the source of this water. Which is still known as the well of Zamzam.  The angel also assured them that one day her husband and son will build the house of God in this place.

 How to perform Sa’ee?

It is Sunnah for Muslims to perform Tawaf immediately after completing it. But if you are tired, you can rest for a while, but only in the pavilion. When your strength is with you, then you go back to do it from there. The first thing to do is to perform ablution. Then after that, you are instructed to make seven rounds between the hills of Safa and Marwa.

When to perform Sa’ee?

It is performed after the tawaf prayer. So it is good that you stay in ablution. Muslim pilgrims depart for Safa and Marwa after drinking water from the well of Zamzam. As soon as the Muslims reach the top of the Safa hill, they turn towards the Kaaba and thank Allah, and praise Him. Then they come down to the hill of Marwa.

Significance of Sa’ee in Umrah?

The ritual of Sa'ee reflects this ongoing struggle that a person faces throughout his life, as Hazrat Hajira (AS) experienced this. Because of their unwavering faith in God, God responded to their prayers and their needs were fulfilled. Sa'ee is the best way for a pilgrim to get close to Allah in this modern age.

Conclusion:

The hills of Safa Marwa are known as the glory of Allah. This incident happened at a short distance from Masjid Al-Haram in Holy Kaaba. According to the Islamic duties on the occasion of Hajj and Umrah, the Hills of Safa Marwa plays an important role for the pilgrims. Pilgrims are instructed to walk seven times between the hills of Safa-Marwa to commemorate Hazrat Hajira (AS). She was looking for water in the desert and Allah revealed the miracle of Zamzam to her.
