What Is Ramadan and What We Do Fast | What The Muslims Do In The Ramadan


Ramadan is a 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar and it is a holy month of fasting. It starts and finishes with the appearance of the new moon.

As Allah states:

O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may attain Taqwa.

It is a more important month and it has some reasons.

Allah states: Ramadan is my month.

Fast during the month of Ramadan as it is one of five pillars of Islam and therefore it is an essential part of Islam in which every Muslim believes.

Allah revealed to the Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) the Holy Quran in one of the last odd nights of Ramadan.

Last odd nights are started from 21 and are ended on 29 dates of Ramadan. There is one night in which the Book of Allah revealed. The Worships of this night is equal to worships of 1000 nights.

What the Muslims do in the Ramadan:

In the Arabic language, the word fast is called Sawm and literally means “to abstain”. Its real meaning not only abstaining from drink, food and sex, while also abstain us from cigarettes, smoking, talking about others behind their backs, using foul or bad language and from any bad deed.

During the Ramadan:

Muslims don’t eat or drink from dawn to dusk.

It is obligatory but it is not obligatory for all.

There are some people on which fast during the Ramadan is not compulsory.

1: A traveller

2: A sick person
3: States of Menses or Post- childbirth bleeding (for the woman)

4: The Old Man and Old Woman and those with chronic diseases

5: A pregnant and breastfeeding woman

Fast consist of two parts in which one is called Sahoor and second is called Iftar. When the time of fast starts and it is called Sahoor. When the time of the fast end and it is called Iftar.

Allah says about this month that the reward of one worship is equal to the reward of seventy worships. Therefore, each Muslim tries to perform every part of fast because it is an opportunity of every Muslim to get more and more rewards.

It is a crime in some countries, people who drink and eat during this month in public. The countries names are Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan, where maybe pay some penalty.
           
After the sunset prayer which is called Asar prayer, Muslims gather in mosques and homes to break their fast with a meal. People use different foods to break their fast but normally use dates and water as it is related to Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

Tarweeh:





Tarweeh starts after the fifth prayer which name is Isha and it is the last prayer. Tarweeh is also called Qyam ul-Lail. It is simply offered as Muslims perform the other 5 prayers. In the Taraweeh, Imam recites whole Quran in nights of Ramadan. According to some sects, the number of Taraweeh are different, such as, some perform 8-rakts and some perform 20-rakts.


Islamic months consist of 29 and 30 days. The end of Ramadan is celebrated as Eid ul-Fitr (feast of fast-breaking).
