Hazrat Khadija (RA) - First Wife Of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)


Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) is a last Messenger or Prophet of Allah Almighty. He (PBUH) introduced a religion whose name is Islam. Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) had 11 wives according to Hadith Books. The wives of Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) are called the mothers of believers (Muslims). The mothers of Muslims played different roles at different times in Islam.

The names of Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him):

1: Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (RA)
2: Sawdah bint Zam’ah ibn Qays (RA)
3: Ayesha bint Abi Bakr al-Siddeeq (RA)
4: Hafsa bint Umar (RA)
5: Zainab bint Khuzaymah (RA)
6: Umm Salama bint Abi Umayyah (RA)
7: Juwayriah bint al-Haarith (RA)
8: Zainab bint Jahsh (RA)
9: Umm Habeebah bint Abi Sufyaan (RA)
10: Maymoonah bint al-Haarith (RA)
11: Safiyyah bint Huyayy ibn Akhtab (RA)

But we only discuss here, the role of the 1st wife of Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (RA) :

Khadija was the daughter of Khuwaylid ibn Asad the Bani Asad of the Quraysh tribe. She was the first wife of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). She was born in Makkah in 556 A.D. Hazrat Khadijah (RA), who was called al-Tahira due to her virtues character and was called Kubra late, after her death.



 She was the eldest wife of Muhammad (PBUH). She was a wealthy merchant. Hazrat Khadija (RA) hired Muhammad (PBUH) as a business agent to accompany her convoy to Damascus. When the Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) returned then Hazrat Khadija (RA) initiated a marriage proposal because she had been impressed by his success at business, his reliability, honesty, and truthful personality. At the time of marriage, the age of Khadija was 40 and she was widowed with 2 children whereas the age of Muhammad (PBUH) was 25.

Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) has 6 children with her and their names are Qasim, Zaynab, Ruqiyyah, Umm Qulsum, Fatima and Abdullah. Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) didn’t take another wife until she died. All His children were born from her, except Ibrahim.

The marriage of the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) to Khadija (RA), and her virtues, in which narrated a hadith from Ayesha who said: I never felt jealous of any of the wives of the Prophet (PBUH) as I did of Khadija, although she died before he married me, because of what I heard him say about her. Reported by al-Bukhari, 3815.

When 1st revelation revealed on Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), Hazrat Khadija (RA) was the 1st person to believe in Muhammad (PBUH) and she supported and assisted him with her wealth.
Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) spent the month of Ramadan in a cave on the mountain of Hira, which is on the outskirts of Makkah. Khadijah always made it sure that he was provided with food and drink during his retreat.



When the pilgrims perform their umrah then they visit the Cave of Hira and offer 2 nafls because this Ziyarah place accommodated in Umrah Package 2023.

 When Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) was 40 and Hazrat Khadija 55, Muhammad (PBUH) suddenly appeared at their house, trembling with fear and saying, “Cover me up…,” Khadija (RA) wrapped a blanket around him and when he had calmed down.

Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) told her about the revelation. Hazrat Khadija (RA) said, Allah would surely protect him from any danger and would never allow anyone to revile him as he was a man of peace and reconciliation and consistently extended the hand of friendship to all.

She also said: you are loving to the relatives, kind to thy neighbors, charitable to the poor, hospitable to the stranger, and even a defender of the truth. Hazrat Khadijah (RA) went with the Muhammad (PBUH) towards her cousin whose name was Warqah ibn Nawfal, who confirmed Muhammad’s Prophet Hood soon afterward.

 When the Makkah’s idolaters surrounded the Muslims, Khadija (RA) too was under siege with the Prophet (PBUH) for 2 or 3 years, and she never hesitated to spend all her wealth for the sake of delivering his message.

Hazrat Khadija (RA) passed away at the age of 65 before 3 years of emigration. The total period of happy marriage was 25 years. This year is recorded as “the year of sorrow” because the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) lost 2 of his most loyal supporters against the polytheists in a space of 3 days which names are: Abu Taalib who was the uncle and Khadija (RA) who was beloved wife.


Hazrat Khadija (RA) buried in Jannat al-Mualla cemetery and this cemetery is situated in Makkah.
